American Services FAQ
Consular Services for U.S. Citizens
1. I would like to register with the Consulate in Chiang Mai. How do I do this?
Citizens living and residing in the northern 15 provinces of Thailand are advised to register their presence in the country through the U.S. Department of State's automated online registration system, https://travelregistration.state.gov/. U.S. citizens may also contact the Consular Section at the U.S. Consulate General Chiang Mai via e-mail acschn@state.gov or by calling +66(53)10-7777.
2. How can I register to vote from Thailand?
For information on absentee voting, please visit the following website of the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok. Information on Absentee Voting.
3. I am applying for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad. Are there any special procedures to consider?
Yes. Immediately after making your appointment online for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, please contact the American Citizen Services Unit at 053-10-7777 for information about required documentation to prepare for your interview. If you are coming to the Consulate prior to February 10, 2009 for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad application, you should contact the Consular Section at 053-10-7777 for information and to schedule an appointment.
4. How long will the Consular Section take to process my service?
Current processing times for our most popular services are as follows:
Notary services: same day
Passport pages added: same day
Affidavits for marriage in Thailand: same day
Affidavits for Thai immigration or other Thai government related affidavits: same day
New passports: two weeks
Consular Reports of Birth Abroad (similar to a birth certificate): three weeks
5. My passport was stolen or lost. Can the Consulate issue an emergency passport? What is the cost?
To get a replacement passport, you will need to make an appointment online for a passport service by clicking here. At the time of your appointment, please bring the police report for the lost passport, picture identification, passport pictures on a white background (2x2), $97.00 (in US or Thai currency, or you can pay with a credit card), and confirmation of your appointment. When you report the loss, theft, or misplacement of your passport you must execute an affidavit fully describing the circumstances under which it was lost or stolen. The consular officer taking an application for replacement of a lost, stolen, or misplaced passport must be reasonably satisfied as to your identity and citizenship before issuing the replacement. Please inform the consular officer if you are in an emergency travel situation. In general, applications are forwarded to Washington and returned to post within one to three weeks. Emergency passports are valid for one year, and take about 24 hours to process. For more information about lost and stolen passports, see: http://travel.state.gov/law/info/info_623.html
6. I have questions regarding a friend or relative’s application and interview for a non-immigrant visa. May I ask for visa information during U.S. Citizen Services hours?
Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for American Citizen Services only. As a courtesy to other Americans waiting to be assisted, please direct questions regarding visa applications and interviews to conschiangmai@state.gov.
