and Enhance Ties between the United States and Northern Thailand
(Dec 14) U.S. Ambassador Kristie Kenney made an official visit to Chiang Mai to participate in the dedication of a U.S.-funded women’s dormitory at Payap University and to highlight U.S. engagement in northern Thailand. This was the Ambassador’s fourth trip to Chiang Mai and sixth trip to northern Thailand in 2011.
Ambassador Kenney was joined by U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Regional Development Mission Director Michael Yates, Payap University administrators, and other dignitaries in a ceremony to open Payap University’s new dormitory complex. USAID provided $700,000 to the Alpha dormitory for women. Since 1978, USAID has donated more than $10 million to Payap University to fund campus projects, including the construction of classrooms, libraries, dormitories, the law school, pharmacology laboratories, and accessibility enhancements for disabled students.
In her remarks, Ambassador Kenney highlighted the important role of education in Thailand’s development and noted a key aspect of U.S. engagement in Thailand was supporting higher education. She said the dormitory dedication was another example of the strong ties the United States has with northern Thailand.
