Earth Day, observed annually on April 22, celebrates the natural gifts of our planet and focuses attention on the work still needed to protect our world.  In the United States every year, thousands of events are organized by non-governmental organizations to promote environmental awareness and a commitment to protecting the environment.

Fifteen years of poster art commemorating Earth Day are on display in Chiang Mai at the AUA language school and library on Ratchadamnern Rd. and on the walls of the U.S. Consulate General opposite the Mae Ping River.   The 2007 poster by acclaimed artist Cathie Bleck depicts animals endangered by illegal trafficking and poaching.

In cooperation with the Sunday Bike Group and the Northern Region Environmental Office, the U.S. Consulate also provided a set of Earth Day posters for an April 8 bicycling promotion campaign targeted at global warming.  Chiang Mai Governor Wichai Srikwan and Environmental Office Director Apiwat Khunarak kicked off the event with remarks about efforts to make Chiang Mai a “Green and Clean City”.  Consul General Bea Camp distributed the posters to biking participants through a lucky draw at the Forestry Department office on Charoenprathet Rd.
