2010 Summer Work And Travel Program (SWT) Information For Students

The United States Consulate General in Chiang Mai announces a special website for foreign university students interested in the 2010 Summer Work and Travel (SWT) Program.  SWT Program participants have the opportunity to participate in daily life in America through temporary work and travel during their school breaks.  On the SWT website, students can find official program information and a list of local agencies that are familiar with our special SWT visa application procedures.  The list also has contact and fee information for each of these agencies.

Holiday Travel Reminder

As the holiday travel season is rapidly approaching, the U.S. Consulate General in Chiang Mai would like to remind all American citizens to take a proactive approach in travel planning, whether your trip will be for business, pleasure, or study.  The best way to ensure a carefree and relaxing trip is to prevent problems before they happen, and the more you learn about passports, visas, customs, immunizations, and other travel basics, the less likely you are to have difficulties during your travels.

Consular Section Closure

The U.S. Consulate General Consular Section will be closed November 30-December 1, 2009 for staff training.  During this period, the Consular Section will be closed to routine services such as passport services, issuing Consular Reports of Birth Abroad, performing notarials, and distributing federal benefits checks.

Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation

U.S. Consulate General, Chiang Mai calls for proposals for the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation.
   

The U.S. Consulate General, Chiang Mai is pleased to announce that the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok and the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State is calling for proposals for the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation 2010.  The deadline for submitting applications is December 10, 2009.

On September 30, 2009, U.S. Consul General Michael K. Morrow led members of the Consulate community to visit baby panda Lin Ping, highlighting American missionaries’ participation in the founding of the Chiang Mai Zoo over half a century ago.









Yes We Can! U.S. Embassy Sponsors Arts Scholarships

The Embassy of the United States of America is offering full tuition and scholarship to interested students to attend the “Youth Excellence on Stage (YES) Academy Thailand 2009” organized by American Voices, in cooperation with Silpakorn University Faculty of Music.  This new week-long performing arts training academy for Thai youth makes its debut October 17, 2009.  Workshops and classes will continue daily from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm through October 24. NOTICE TO U.S. CITIZENS

The United States Consulate General in Chiang Mai recently received the following notice from the Royal Thai Government’s Department of Business Development.  At their request, we are disseminating it so American citizens in Thailand are aware of Thai government policy regarding investment by foreign nationals in farming and real estate.

Climate Change: Together we can Meet the Challenge

In a September 22 op-ed, Ambassador Eric G. John notes that “Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing our world today [and] President Obama recognises that the United States must be a leader in the global effort to combat climate change. We have a responsibility as the world's largest historic emitter of greenhouse gases. The 2009 Trafficking in Persons Report on 170 countries is the most comprehensive worldwide report on the efforts of governments to combat severe forms of trafficking in persons. Its findings will raise global awareness and spur countries to take effective actions to counter trafficking in persons.

The annual Trafficking in Persons Report serves as the primary diplomatic tool through which the U.S. Government encourages partnership and increased determination in the fight against forced labor, sexual exploitation, and modern-day slavery.
